Derek Gripper & Madosini
South African polyphonies
Derek Gripper Guitar
Madosini Vocals, Jew’s harp
The breathtakingly talented Derek Gripper draws inspiration from the considerable heritage of African music, with works composed for the kora played on the classical guitar. For this project, he has invited Madosini, who is known and respected for her playing and making of traditional instruments, such as the Umrhubhe (a mouth bow), the Uhadi (a gourd bow) and the Isitolotolo (similar to a Jew’s harp). She uses these to create amazing polyphonies, rubbing and striking them to produce harmonies that she organises into melodies. An event not to be missed.
