Le Mystère de la guimbarde
A small, up-close concert
Wang Li Jew’s harps and hulusi (cucurbit) flutes
Wang Li is from Qingdao in north-eastern China. He has made the Jew’s harp his instrument of choice, gradually building a sonic space of searching and freedom. Wang Li also plays the ’hulusi’, an amazing instrument and ancestor of the Chinese ’sheng’, formed of a gourd resonator, and bamboo pipes to play melodies and drones. His music opens up an inner world that takes listeners back to the echoes of their childhoods, from the storms of the soul to the turmoil of life and then silence. It is all breath and vibrations, memories and visions. His imagination carries both personal and universal resonances.
